Zip-off Shorts-to-Pants

by Heather

Starting the new year off right with some fabulous outdoor gear.
The Pattern Adventure Shorts to Pants were a VERY satisfying sew.
The custom fit was spot-on - what a welcome treat.

Extras

Elastic waistband - I am a paddler and I find that if I have fly-front pants it tends to chafe and rub where the button/closure is because I spend so much time in a seated position.
The belt loops will be great to add a webbing belt for wearing while working outdoors.

Thigh zip pockets - this was a new way of doing zip pockets and I was a little fearful at first.

My Fabric choice

My first pair was a lighter weight Supplex that will be great for warmer weather, while the second pair is more heavy-duty for yard work and shoulder season camping trips.
I used Supplex Nylon from Sew inspired by Discovery Fabrics (Peppermint colour) and paired it with a black Cordura that I had in my stash.

Trial pair - wearable mock

I skipped the thigh pockets on those ones and because of that they were a faster project to sew up, but I will likely wear them less often.
I definitely need pockets. I am so excited with how these pants came out. Now I am trying to decide which colours to use for my next pair. More pics to come once I get all my threads trimmed!

My second Pair of Shorts to Pants

I settled for Peppermint green Supplex Nylon and black Cordura. The suggestion of using an uncoated Cordura for the back/butt area and the front bottom part is just perfect for my use.

If you have been putting off trying a pair - I highly recommend it. The pattern tutorial takes you step-by-step and gives a beautiful finish.
I just trusted in the process and didn't deviate (which I normally tend to do) and they turned out even better than I had hoped!

Shorts zipper installation

I wanted to try it out and figure out the zip installation before cutting into my more expensive fabric. The instructions were very detailed and following step by step, I was able to install the zips for the removable legs.

Thigh Zipper Pocket

This was a new way of doing zip pockets and I was a little fearful at first.
I decided to purchase Birgit's video course and it was SO worth it. I was excited to learn something new. My favourite part was where Birgit said to not worry about it being perfect
and using a bar tack to reinforce the welt corner. THAT was magical. I will forever be using this zip pocket technique now!
